How Does Botox® Work For Migraine Relief?

Botox®, a specialized form of botulinum toxin, is most commonly known for its use in cosmetic procedures, but it also has powerful therapeutic uses.

When administered as a treatment for migraines, Botox® Therapeutic works to relieve symptoms in 2 significant ways:

  1. Migraines are often triggered by the release of certain chemicals in the brain, called neurotransmitters, that transmit pain signals. Botox® works by blocking the release of these neurotransmitters, preventing them from reaching nerve endings around the head and neck. This interruption in the pain signaling pathway helps reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.

  2. Another significant way this treatment helps is by reducing muscle tension around the head and neck. Chronic migraines can be exacerbated by muscle contractions in these areas. When injected into specific areas, Botox® relaxes these muscles, decreasing the muscle tension contributing to migraine pain.

By addressing the chemical and physical aspects of migraine triggers, Botox® Therapeutic can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraine headaches.

Who is Best Suited for a Botox® Therapeutic Treatment?

This type of migraine treatment is best suited for adults aged 18-64 who suffer from chronic migraines. In order to receive Botox® for migraines, you must meet the criteria for chronic migraines.

This is defined as having 15 or more migraine days per month, with each headache lasting four or more hours. In many cases, insurance companies also require patients to try oral preventative medications and show documentation that they had little impact or poor side effects before they approve Botox® for migraine treatment.

The Effectiveness of Botox® Therapeutic

If you’re approved for treatment, Botox® can effectively reduce the frequency and severity of chronic migraines.

On average, Botox® Therapeutic can prevent 8-9 migraine days per month, allowing more opportunities for productive and enjoyable activities. Plus, patients typically find their headaches to be about 50% less severe.

Patients also may find they require fewer medications to relieve the onset of their symptoms. This can minimize their dependence on medications that may have undesirable side effects.

For many sufferers, Botox® results in a significant improvement in their quality of life, enabling them to engage more fully in work, social, and family activities.

Treatment Protocol for Botox® for Migraines

We follow a well-defined protocol for all migraine treatments to ensure the best results for our patients. Here’s what you can expect from Botox® Therapeutic at Essentials Medi Spa:

  1. Botox® is administered at proven therapeutic injection sites around the head, neck, and trapezius muscles (traps).

  2. Your treatment plan is customized based on your migraine type and the areas where you experience the most pain. In some cases, this can include treatments for bruxism (jaw clenching).

  3. The injection process is fairly quick and usually takes about 10-20 minutes per session.

  4. Treatments are repeated every 12 weeks to maintain effectiveness.

  5. You may notice results as soon as 4 weeks after the initial treatment. Full benefits will be more noticeable with regular treatment cycles.

Sticking to this protocol helps maximize the benefits you see from treatments. With time and the expertise of a trusted provider, you can find relief from pain caused by chronic migraines.

Cost and Coverage for Chronic Migraine Treatments in Alberta

In Alberta, migraine treatment with Botox® Therapeutic is a provincially covered procedure for eligible individuals. That means that if you have a valid Alberta Health Care card and are within the eligible age range, there is no charge for the injection fee.

Ages 18-64: If you have a valid Alberta Health Care card, there is no charge for the injection fee.

Age 65 and Older: Once you turn 65, the injection fee is no longer covered by Alberta Health. The cost at our clinic is $250 per injection session.

The cost of the product, Botox® Therapeutic, is separate from the injection fee. At Essentials Medi Spa, Botox® Therapeutic is priced at $3.57 per unit. However, your personal insurance may cover all or a portion of this cost. At your first consultation, we will collect a copy of your insurance and complete some paperwork to determine if you have full, partial, or no insurance coverage for Botox® Therapeutic.

Most insurance companies require treatments to be spaced no sooner than every three months. This aligns with the recommended treatment protocol, which ensures both effectiveness and insurance compliance.
