How does laser hair removal work?

A device is used to deliver a concentrated beam of light that is converted to heat and absorbed by your hair. The heat damages your hair follicles, preventing or limiting future hair growth.

Who is a good candidate for laser hair removal? Can it be done on all skin tones?

Generally, individuals with dark hair and lighter skin tones are ideal candidates for laser hair removal. This contrast between hair and skin colour allows the laser to effectively target the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin.

However, laser technology has come a long way! We can use multiple wavelengths, like with the GentleMax Pro™, to target different pigments and successfully treat a wide range of skin tones and hair types.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

While laser hair removal is an effective way of removing unwanted hair, it may not always be 100% permanent. Hair grows in cycles, which means multiple treatments are needed to target the follicles in their different stages of growth.

Our hair has four different phases: anagen, catagen, telogen, and exogen. Laser hair removal is most effective during the anagen phase when the follicles rapidly produce new cells and encourage hair growth.

Overall, most people experience a significant decrease in hair density and thickness after several sessions. Remember, everyone is different so long-term results can vary based on different factors. You can expect to enjoy smooth, hair-free skin for several months or even years.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

To prepare for your laser hair removal appointment, it's important to avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least two weeks prior to help prevent irritation. Avoid waxing, or plucking for six weeks prior to your first appointment, as well as throughout your follow-up treatments, because these methods remove the hair from the root, which is targeted by the laser.

We also recommend shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment, making it easier for the laser to target the hair follicle.

Arriving with clean, makeup-free skin will optimize your treatment results.

What kind of results can I expect?

Everyone is different and may experience varying reactions or results from laser hair removal. Most people will see a significant reduction in unwanted hair growth after multiple treatments. Results typically last for months or years.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Each clinic or medi spa is different, and it depends on the size of area being treated, but you can expect to pay between $60–$290 per treatment.

What happens after my treatment? What will my recovery look like?

After your laser hair removal treatment, avoid picking or scratching the treated area. For a couple days after treatment, your skin may have some redness, a little irritation, or feel hot, kind of like it’s sunburned. The redness will come down usually within the first day, but if it is a bit red in the following days, use cool compresses and aloe to help soothe your skin. If your face was treated, you should be able to wear makeup the next day.

To optimize results and protect your skin, avoid sun exposure for at least two weeks and consistently use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher throughout the course of your treatment. Refrain from other hair removal methods like waxing, electrolysis, or tweezing for four to six weeks.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

The number of sessions completely depends your hair type, skin tone, and the treatment area. Typically, it takes an average of four to six sessions to achieve significant hair reduction. However, some patients may require more or fewer treatments.

How often can I get laser hair removal?

The ideal time between laser hair removal sessions is usually four to six weeks. During this time you may see some regrowth. The amount of time between your sessions can vary depending on the area being treated.

When is the best time to get laser hair removal?

The best time to get a laser hair removal treatment is during the cooler months, when sun exposure is at it’s lowest. However, you can treat areas that are not regularly exposed to the sun, like your underarms or a bikini line, year around!

To be on the safe side, you can schedule your appointments during the fall or winter months to avoid excessive sun exposure and allow your skin to recover between sessions. If planned out correctly, you’d have enough time to complete your entire treatment plan before the warm weather arrives so you can be summer ready!
