Sclerotherapy Spider Vein Treatment in Medicine Hat
For Spider Vein Treatment, Sclerotherapy Is The Gold Standard
If you are looking for spider vein treatments near me, then Essentials Medi-Spa should be your next stop. Spider veins are not something you just have to live with. Our aesthetic team is trained to help you identify if aesthetic sclerotherapy or laser treatments are the safe and effective treatment for your spider viens. Our team can address all your spider vein and varicose vein questions & concerns. For example, did you know laser is best for treating spider veins on the face, ankles and for sporadic areas on the legs, while sclerotherapy is best for very interconnected superficial spider veins?
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy treatments are a non-invasive (non-surgical) option for removing small interconnected spider veins. Spider veins (telangiectasias) are small, thin veins that are very close to the surface of the skin. Even though these small veins are connected to the vast venous system, they are really not an essential part of it, so they may be eliminated by using an injection of a sclerosing agent called Polidocanol in a strength of 1% or 0.5%. The vein collapses in on itself, hardens, and because there is no more blood flowing through it, you cannot see it and it fades away in time. It is important to know which veins should be injected and which should not; therefore, a consultation is necessary before treatment.
Spider Veins & What They Look Like
During a complimentary consultation our doctor, nurse or medical aesthetician will point out which veins are spider veins and which are varicose.
- Spider veins may be spider like, radiating out from a central point.
- They may resemble tiny branch-like shapes
- They may appear as thin separated lines
Some spider veins should not be injected with sclerosing agent, and instead should be treated by a laser tech with a vascular handpiece and settings specific for veins (examples of when laser is a better option: veins of the face, ankles, and thin separated veins on the legs).
Spider veins which are more interconnected, branch-like, and superficial (near to the surface) respond really well to sclerotherapy because one injection can branch out to all interconnected veins quickly and easily.
View the images below and see if you can identify which veins would benefit from sclerotherapy injection vs. laser treatment.
What are the benefits of Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is proven to reduce the appearance of spider veins with a series of just a few sessions at Essentials Medi-Spa. If you have larger varicose veins, deeper veins, or the veins are in areas where sclerotherapy is not recommended, then our specialists may recommend you see another practitioner for an ultrasound guided sclerotherapy, also known as echosclerotherapy, or a vascular surgeon for a surgery which ties off, strips the veins, and removes them altogether.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
Sclerotherapy is a safe, non-surgical treatment, but it is not a one & done treatment. Our doctor or nurse will inject a sclerosing agent (polidocanol) into your vein which will cause it to collapse and fade away. You are not put to sleep with a general anesthetic and your recovery time is shorter than the recovery for surgical vein stripping.
- Appointment Length:
- 30 minutes – but your appointment will be unique to your specific case, some requiring a longer session
- Series of appointments:
- 3-5 sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart
- Noticeable & Long-Term results within:
- 4-6 weeks of your treatment for small veins
- 3 months for slightly larger more interconnected veins
- Note: When we see a vein respond to the treatment, that vein will not reappear BUT new veins may appear and if this happens, you will require further treatment with injections, laser treatment or (potentially) a surgical intervention.
Is Sclerotherapy Right For Me?
Sclerotherapy is an extremely versatile treatment and can be used to treat the concerns of many patients.
You may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy if you:
While sclerotherapy is safe and Health Canada approved, it is not suitable for all patients. You MUST book a consultation prior to undergoing the procedure. The consultation is where we find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure, we inform you of the risks, benefits and alternatives and we explain what to expect before/during/after.
Where did you take your training?
Dr. Brooks and our registered nurse Kara received their sclerotherapy treatment certification through Empire Medical in Phoenix, AZ. Dalyce, our medical aesthetician specializing in laser treatment, received her laser certifications with Syneron Candela and The Canadian Laser & Medical Aesthetics Training Centre in Moose Jaw, SK.

Why Don’t You Inject Varicose Veins?
Sclerotherapy is a very effective treatment for small veins. A true, bulging, varicose vein, as pictured below, is not something that our doctor, nurse or laser teach are able to treat at Essentials Medi-Spa.
If your veins resemble or are larger than the vein shown below, then we recommend looking into
- echosclerotherapy (an ultrasound guided treatment), or
- get a referral to a vascular surgeon
